A Message from Our Superintendent
Dear San Carlos Apache Tribal Community, Families, and Students,
I'm excited to share a few thoughts as we move forward together into another school year. It’s truly an honor to serve as Superintendent of San Carlos Unified School District, and it means even more to me because this isn’t just a job. It’s personal. I’ve spent 18 years in education, the past several of those years in leadership roles. I care deeply about our students, our staff, and our community.
At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: every student has the potential to succeed when they’re supported, encouraged, and given the right opportunities. Our job is to help make that happen every day, for every student.
We’re focused on building strong foundations, especially when it comes to preschool and early literacy. We’re also helping students set personal and academic goals so they can dream big and chase those dreams. In high school, we’re working to expand dual enrollment opportunities so our students can get a jumpstart on college. And we know attendance is key, so we’re creating more ways for students to stay engaged through sports, clubs, and activities that reflect their passions.
None of this can happen without working together. That means partnering closely with the Tribal Council, local agencies, and, most importantly, you, our families and community members. We’re committed to creating a school system that’s culturally grounded and truly reflects the identity, values, and strength of the San Carlos Apache people. Our strategic plan, Empowering Our N’nee People the Brave Way, is guiding that work, and we’re using the resources and knowledge already within our community to make learning more meaningful and relevant.
In the end, our mission is to empower students to grow into proud, culturally aware, and globally minded N’nee. I’m grateful to be on this journey with you, and I look forward to what we’ll accomplish together.
With respect and appreciation,
Shawn Pietila
Superintendent of the San Carlos Unified School District #20
